Brazilian Porcupine – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Brazilian Porcupine:
The Brazilian Porcupine is a mostly tree-dwelling mammal found in the tropical rainforests of Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, the Guyanas, Bolivia and Trinidad. The body is covered with short, thick spines which are whitish or yellowish in color, mixed with the darker hair, while the underside is grayish. The lips and nose are fleshy. The tail is prehensile, with the tip curling upward so as to get a better grip on tree branches. This porcupine can grow to forty inches long, but half of that is tail. It weighs about nine pounds. Its feet are reflective of their living in the trees with four long-clawed toes on each that are ideal for grasping branches. During the day it rests in a cavity in a hollow tree or in a well-shaded area of the canopy, 10-30 feet from the forest floor. It rarely descends to the ground, but it shows little fear if it happens to be caught. It is not aggressive but will defend itself ferociously if attacked. Its diet consists of leaves, fruit, and small fresh twigs and shoots. This creature can easily be tamed enough to be kept in captivity. When excited, porcupines stamp their hind feet. Brown-Throated Sloth are one of four members of the Bradypus genus. All four live in the rainforests of Central and South America. These slow moving mammals spend most of their lives in the trees, coming down only when they must and to defecate. They cannot walk, but instead must drag themselves along on all fours. They are capable swimmers. Unlike most other mammals sloths cannot automatically maintain a constant body temperature and so can only live in warm and humid environments. Due to the moist air and slowness of the sloth algae is able to grow on the sloth's back, which helps camouflage the animal. Their fur is also home to small moths. The Capybara is the largest rodent on the planet. They are most closely related to agouti, chinchillas, coyphillas, and guinea pigs. The range of this mammal covers much of the continent of South America (except in Chile). They are semi-aquatic animals who generally stay in areas near water, along with flooded rainforest and marshes adjacent to rivers. They are herbivores who feed mostly on grasses and aquatic plants, but will also eat tree bark and fruits. Capybaras are highly social animals, living in large packs with up to 60-70 individuals from various families. They are the largest rodents on earth, growing up to 3.51 to 4.40 feet (107 to 134 cm) in length, stand 20 to 25 inches tall at the withers (50 to 64 cm), and usually weigh 77 to 150 pounds (35 to 66 kg.) Females are slightly larger than the males. Despite their large size, the capybara is the prey of jaguar, puma, ocelots and even eagles. The Common Squirrel Monkey is native to the rainforests, savannahs, mangroves, and marshlands of the Amazon Basin in the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Paraguay and Venezuela. There are also small populations have been introduced into south Florida and and some islands in the Caribbean. This small primate lives in the middle canopy, but will occasionally come to the ground or go up into the top canopy. They are often hunted by bird of prey, so they tend to stay in areas with thick and dense vegetation. They feed on both plant materials, such as various rainforest fruits and will also eat any insects they catch. They are generally very social animals, living in groups which affords them more protection from predators. While the species isn't considered endangered, they are threatened by habitat loss as well as being captured for the pet trade as well as being used for medical research.
