The Eastern or Common Garter Snake is a small, slender reptile native to various environments of North America. It is a diurnal animal, being active mostly during the daytime hours. In northern areas it is only active during the warmest parts of the day, whereas in the south it can be active most of the daytime. It can be found in forests, fields, prairies, usually near streams, lakes and meadows. It feeds on small amphibians, birds, rodents and even fish.
