The Thorny Seahorse belongs to the order of Syngnathiformes and class Actinopterygii which are the 'ray-finned fishes.' They are native to the south seas from Japan and Micronesia south to the waters surrounding Australia. They are found in shallow areas around sheltered reefs, or in clumps of algae and beds of seagrass. Like all seahorses the male carry the eggs in a brood pouch.
