Subspecies of Leopard Poster Print
There are nine subspecies of Panthera pardus, all of which are considered either endangered or vulnerable. The largest is the Persian or Caucasian Leopard (Panthera pardus tulliana) and the smallest is the Arabian Leopard (Panthera pardus nimr.)

At one time there were two more, but the Eastern Elk (Cervus canadensis canadensis) and Merriam Elk (Cervus canadensis merriami) are long extinct. Elk were completely extirpated from the areas east of the Mississippi in the 1870’s, but have been reintroduced using some of the existing subspecies from the western parts of North America. The Sugar Glider is a small possum native to various forested environments of northern and eastern Australia, Tasmania and Papua New Guinea. While they strongly resemble flying squirrels they are not closely related to them. The name comes from their diet, which consists of tree sap, usually from the eucalyptus, acacia and gum trees. Although they will also catch and eat insects, especially in summer. They are arboreal, rarely coming down from the tree canopy. They are highly social, living in groups of up to seven adults plus young ones. They are hunted by many of the forest predators, such as owls, kookabuurras, snakes, goannas and feral cats. These animals do well in captivity and are often kept as pets. The Sumatran Rhinoceros is one of the five extant rhinos and the only living member of the genus Dicerorhinus. This rainforest dwelling mammal once ranged throughout the jungles of India, Bhutan, Bangladesh and much of Southeast Asia. But due to poaching (mostly or black market sales of their valuable horns) and habitat loss they live only in small, isolated areas in Sumatra, Borneo and Malaysia. They are the smallest of the living rhinos, standing about 4.5 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing about 1500 pounds. They are considered critically endangered. The Sumatran Tiger is found only on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Like all tigers the Sumatran Tiger is critically endangered because of poaching and habitat destruction. There are as few as 350 left in the wild today. They are the smallest of the tiger subspecies with a height 30" at shoulder, weight 200-450 pounds and a body length of 84-106 inches. These large carnivores feed on wild boar, tapir and deer.
