The Long-Tailed Field Mouse - also called a Wood Mouse - is a common rodent found in Europe (Scandinavia and east to the Ukraine) some parts of Northwestern Africa as well as many islands in the Mediterranean. This field mouse is often found in forests, grasslands, and as the name implies cultivated fields. Like other mice, Apodemus sylvaticus is primarily a seed eater, but will also eat small invertebrates like snails and insects. As a curious habit while foraging, the mouse will pick up and distribute visually conspicuous objects, such as leaves and twigs, which they then use as landmarks during exploration. Information about the Atlantic Cod:
The Atlantic Cod is a benthopelagic fish that belongs to the family Gadidae. It is also commercially known as cod, codling or haberdine. They are commonly found in from the shoreline out to the continental shelf. Cod are native to the waters north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and around both coasts of Greenland in the western parts of the Atlantic Ocean. In the east it's found from the Bay of Biscay north to the Arctic Ocean, including the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, Sea of the Hebrides, areas around Iceland and the Barents Sea. The Atlantic Cod can grow to be about 6 feet long (two meters) and weigh roughly 200 pounds (100 kilograms) These are long lived fish, and some individuals can make it to 25 years. Its habitat ranges from the shoreline down to the continental shelf. Back in the 1990 several cod stocks collapsed in the 1990s, with populations falling to below 95% of their normal sizes. Even with a ban on fishing for them the populations have failed to recover. The Atlantic Cod is considered "vulnerable" and is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is the state fish of Massachusetts. The American Shad is a species of migrating herring native to the waters from southern Labrador in Canada south to northern Florida. Despite the name, they are not closely related to other shads. They are medium-sized fish, weighing roughly between three and eight pounds when fully grown. American Shads have a natural flavor that makes them a very desirable fish for the dinner table. The eggs of the fish (called roe) are considered a delicacy. Although most of the American Shad's life is spent at sea, it does travel up rivers to spawn. The Long-Eared Bat is a species of flying mammal native to the western coastal areas of North America. It is a member of the Myotis family which are 'mouse-eared bats', which are diverse and widespread genus with dozens of species. Their ears are normally larger than normal bats. Myotis evotis inhabits a wide range of difference environments, including this often associated with forests. It is found under exfoliating bark, in tree cavities, and in stumps resulting from logging. In areas with few trees, they tend to reside in the crevices of cliffs and even rocks on the ground, in lava-tube caves, and mines which have been abandoned. Long-Eared bats are also found buildings and huddling in large numbers under bridges. The Kaibab Squirrel is a rodent that lives in the Kaibab Plateau which is in the Southwestern United States, in an area of 20 by 40 miles (30 by 60 km). The squirrel's habitat is completely confined to the Ponderosa Pine forests of the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and the northern section of Kaibab National Fores around the town of Jacob Lake, Arizona. It is not found anywhere else in the world. The squirrel feeds on acorns, fruit, and fungi as well as the seeds, bark, and twigs of the trees where it lives. In 1965, 200,000 acres (800 km²) of Kaibab squirrel habitat within Grand Canyon National Park and Kaibab National Forest were declared the Kaibab Squirrel National Natural Landmark. The Jaguarundi - also called the Eyra Cat - is a smaller-sized member of the feline family native to a variety of habitats from Mexico, through much of Central America and most of South America. It can be found in rainforest, lowland brush areas and grasslands, usually not far from running water. In generally the cat has a total length (not including tail) of 21-30 inches (53 to 77 cm) with a tail of about 12 to 24 inches (31 to 60 cm) An adult Jaguarundi usually weighs in at about 7.7 to 20 punds (3.5 to 9.1 kg.) They are not usually much larger than a house cat. The cat's coat can be either a red-orange or charcoal gray - these were once thought to represent two different species, but it is now considered to be one. Despite habitat loss and hunting, these cats are not considered endangered and in fact there is some belief that the animal is expanding it's range further into North America. The Sperm Whale is a marine mammal and a member of the order of Cetaceans. It is a toothed whale and has the distinction of having the largest brain of any animal as well as being the largest toothed animal. The name comes from a substance in it's head called spermaceti, which is milky-white and waxy. A large male or "bull" can grow up to nearly 70 feet long. The Sperm Whale feeds on squid and fish, which they find diving down as deep as nearly two miles. The many battles the animal faces when feeding is displayed in the scars along the mouth and head areas left by the tentacles of it's prey. These mammals are very long-lived and can be up to 70 years.
