Basilosaurus – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Basilosaurus:
The Basilosaurus is an extinct genus of cetaceans - which are marine mammals such as whales, dolphins and porpoises) - that lived during the late Eocene period (40 to 34 million years ago) When they were first discovered in the southern area of the United States it was believed to be a reptile, and that is why they have the suffix "saurus." But later on it was determined to be a marine mammal. Some of the genus grew to be about 60 feet long (18 meters) and believed to be the largest animal living at that time. It was a top predator and would have feared nothing in the ocean, except for those of it's own kind. Fossil specimens have been found having smaller Basilosauruses in their stomachs. The shape of the head wouldn't allow for a large brain, so it's likely that Basilosaurus didn't have the same heightened intelligence or social structures of modern whales. The Basking Shark is the second largest living fish on the planet, after the whale shark. It is a migratory species, found in all the world's temperate oceans. It is a slow moving filter feeder and has anatomical adaptations to filter feeding, such as a greatly enlarged mouth and highly developed gill rakers. The shape of its snout is conical and the gill slits extend around the top and bottom of its head. The gill rakers are dark and bristle-like and are used to catch plankton as water filters through the mouth and over the gills. The basking shark is usually greyish-brown in color with mottled skin. The caudal (tail) fin has a strong lateral keel and a crescent shape. The teeth of the basking shark are very small and numerous and often number one hundred per row. The teeth themselves have a single conical cusp, are curved backwards and are the same on both the upper and lower jaws. Basking sharks are a migrating species and are believed to overwinter in deep waters. They may occur in either small schools or alone. Small schools in the Bay of Fundy and the Hebrides have been seen swimming nose to tail in circles in what may be a form of mating behavior. Despite their large size and threatening appearance, basking sharks are not aggressive and are harmless to people. They can live in waters with various levels of saline, so they are able to venture far into brackish waters searching for food. Bat Rays feed on a variety of sea animals, such as crustaceans, mollusks and small fish. They beat their large pectoral fins (or "wings") along the sandy bottoms of the ocean to expose their prey. Like other rays, they have a sharp stinger in their tails, which can be used to defend itself against potential predators. Bat Rays are fairly placid animals and are very popular in ocean themed parks (such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium) and will tolerate being touched by humans. The Bat star is a member of the family Asteroidea. They are also called the Sea bat, Webbed star, Bat Man and Broad-disk star. This ocean animal is an echinoderm (commonly known as sea stars). It usually has five arms, with the center disk of the animal being much wider than the stubby arms are in length. Bat stars come in many different colors, such as green, purple, red, orange, yellow and brown, either mottled or solid. The bat star gets its name from the webbing between its arms, which is said to resemble a bat's wings. The bat star is usually found in the intertidal zone at an average depth of 260 feet (79 meters). Its range extends from Sitka, Alaska to Baja California in the Pacific Ocean. It is most abundant along the coast of Central California and the Monterey Bay. Bat stars are important as scavengers, collecting algae and dead animals from the ocean floor and helping keep the ocean healthy.
