Fiery-Throated Hummingbird – Signed Fine Art Print

The Fiery-throated Hummingbird is a small to medium-sized hummingbird found in montane or cloud forests, second growth, shrubs of the sub-páramo, or highland pastures with trees. It is the only member of the genus Panterpe. This is a common to abundant bird of montane forest canopy above 1400 m, and also occurs in scrub at the woodland edges and clearings. This bird is about 4.3 inches long (11 cm) and weighs a mere .02 ounces (5.7 grams) The sexes are similar, but young birds have rufous fringes to the head plumage. The call is a high-pitched twittering. The female is entirely responsible for nest building and incubation. Like most other hummingbirds, this bird feeds on nectar a variety of small flowers and bromeliads. The Costa's Hummingbird is a small species of hummingbird - an adult grows only to about 3.5 inches (7.6–8.9 cm) long. The male Costa's Hummingbird's most distinguishing feature is its vibrant purple cap and throat. Females are much less colorful than the males. The Costa's Hummingbird is native to the arid, brushy deserts and any nearby gardens of the Southwestern United States and the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. Like other species of hummingbird the Costa's feeds on flower nectar and any tiny insects that it happens to find in the flower petals. The name is a tribute to the French nobleman Louis Marie Pantaleon Costa, Marquis de Beauregard (1806–1864). The Broad-Billed Hummingbird is a medium-sized is a medium-sized hummingbird. It is about 3.5 inches long (9–10 centimeters), weighing roughly three to four grams with a wingspan of 5.5 inches 15 centimeters).  These hummingbirds are noted for their beautiful emerald colors of blues, greens, and gold. As with many other bird species, the females are less colorful than the male. Broad-Billed Hummingbirds are found in Mexico, southern Arizona, and western Texas, typically in desert canyons and mesquite thickets of arid lowlands. This hummingbird is partially migratory, retreating from northernmost areas during the winter. The Black-Chinned Hummingbird is a small hummingbird - adults only being about 3.25 inches or i8.25 cm long. Adults are metallic green above and white below with green flanks. Their bill is long, straight and very slender. The adult male has a black face and chin, a glossy purple throat band and a dark forked tail. The female has a dark rounded tail with white tips and no throat patch; they are similar to female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Their breeding habitat is open semi-arid areas near water in the western United States, northern Mexico and southern British Columbia. The female builds a well-camouflaged nest in a protected location in a shrub or tree using plant fiber, spider webs and lichens. They are migratory and spend most of the winter in Mexico. These birds feed on nectar from flowers using a long extendable tongue or catch insects on the wing. While collecting nectar, they also assist in plant pollination. Because of their small size, they are vulnerable to insect-eating birds and animals. This bird is fairly common in its breeding range. A hybrid between this species and Anna's Hummingbird was called "Trochilus" violajugulum. The Black-chinned Hummingbird is also known to hybridize with Costa's Hummingbird. The animal was almost extinct in the 1930's and 1940's due to shooting and egg collecting. They have recovered completely now and are considered common. The Western Screech Owl is a small, nocturnal, woodland bird of prey native to the forests, scrublands and riparian woodlands of western North America, from Alaska down into Northern Mexico. It is one of the west's most frequently encounter owls, usually at the lower elevations. This owl is very aggressive when it comes to defending it's nest, and has been know to attack human who stray to close. They feed on a variety of prey such as insects, moths, small mammals like mice, shrews, pocket gophers, amphibians, crustaceans, and even farm animals like small ducks and chickens. The name "kennicotti" was given to this owl to honor Robert Kennicott who was an American explorer and naturalist.
