The Grapevine Beetle - also called the Spotted June Beetle or the Spotted Pelidnota - is a member of the subfamily Rutelinae of the Scarab beetle family. These insects are are fairly common in the north and central United States and Eastern Canada. They grow to be about 1 inch long (2.5 cm) While some beetles can cause massive damage to crops the Grapevile Beetles does relatively little damage to their host plants. The beetles fly at a fast speed, usually in a curving flight. There are many color variations, so many that at one time there was thought to be ten subspecies (these were all eventually discarded and there are no subspecies) Like many other beetles they are found in forests, thickets, and woods, and is mostly seen during the summer. Active flyers, these beetles are commonly attracted to lights at night. It is also seen in vineyards and gardens, which is what gives the beetle it's common name. The adult beetle eats the leaves and fruit of grapevines, both wild and cultivated, although it is not normally a major pest of vineyards. Beetle eggs are laid in rotten wood, tree stumps, or on soil near the host plant, where they hatch into larvae. Larvae then dig their way into the soil, where they feed on rotted wood. Pupal chambers are built shallowly underground. Their range is from the southwestern United States down through Central America and into the countries of Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina, along with some islands in the Caribbean such as Trinidad. These birds of prey are on the smaller size 18–24 inches (46–61 centimeters) in length weighing about 16.8 ounces (475 grams) on average. The Gray Hawk is an effective hunter and will feed upon a variety of prey; lizards, snakes, small mammals, birds and amphibians. The Gray Jay is a medium-sized passerine bird native to the boreal forests of of North America, from the north to the tree-line and in subalpine forests of the Rocky Mountains south to New Mexico and Arizona. There are several subspecies of this jay scattered across their range. The bird tends to prefer forests with black and white spruce trees, as well as pine trees. Like other jays they are opportunistic feeders and will eat a variety of plant matter such as nuts, fruits and insects, but they will also raid the nests of other birds and eat eggs and fledglings. The Gray Jay will also exploit human activity such as camping and raid campsites stealing any food they find. As the name implies, they are very small - only weighing about 2.4 ounces (58-67 grams) but they are the largest of the mouse lemurs. Like other similar species, the Gray Mouse Lemur is nocturnal and arboreal (tree dwelling.) This primate can be found in the dry, lowland tropical forests of Madagascar. They are opportunistic feeders, and will eat various types of fruit, flowers, insects and nectar. They are hunted by snakes, owls, and other mammals. They are often taken as prey, but this is counterbalanced by the rapid reproduction rate which results in many young. The Gray Whale is a large marine mammal weighing about 35-40 tons and growing to a length of 52 feet (16 meters). They are found in the eastern North Pacific Ocean, and there also a small and critically endangered population in the western North Pacific Ocean. They were once found in the Atlantic Ocean, but were hunted to extinction in that area, although there have been reported sightings that may mean they are attempting to repopulate those waters. The Gray Whale feeds on small animals called benthic crustaceans. Each October, these mammals make a long migration from the Berin and Chukchi sea, which begin to freeze with the onset of winter, southwards to the warm waters of the Gulf of California, where they will have their offspring. The Gray Whale is the only living species of the genus Physeter. They were given protection in 1949 by the International Whaling Commission and since then have not been hunted on a large scale and the whale is not considered endangered. The Gray-Crowned Crane is is a bird in the crane family Gruidae. It occurs in dry savannah in Africa south of the Sahara, although it nests in somewhat wetter habitats. They can also be found in marshes, cultivated lands and grassy flatlands near rivers and lakes in eastern from the Uganda and Kenya, south to South Africa. This animal does not migrate. There are two subspecies. These beautiful birds are about 3.3 feet tall (1 m) and weigh about 7.y pounds (3.5 kg) they have an average wingspan of 6.5 feet (2.2 m) They are omnivores, eating plants, seeds, grain, insects, frogs, worms, snakes, small fish and the eggs of aquatic animals.
