The American Paddlefish is a large freshwater fish and member of the order Acipenseriformes, which are primitive ray-finned fish. It is also called the Mississippi Paddlefish or Spoonbill. They are found in the slow moving waters of the Mississippi River drainage system. They were once also found in Lake Erie, but it appears they have been extirpated from there. This very large Chondrostean fish can grow to a length of about 7 feet (220 centimeters.) It is one of two living species of paddlefish, although the other - the Chinese Paddlefish - is likely extinct. The American Paddlefish was once common in it's native environment, however due to habit loss and overfishing, the species is now considered vulnerable in most areas. It remains a popular sports fish and in areas where the populations are stable. The American Painted Lady - or Amercan Lady - is a true brush-foot butterfly found throughout North America. They are usually found in open places with low vegetation including dunes, meadows, parks, vacant lots, forest edges. The wing spread of adults is 1.75 to 2.40 inches. The upper surface of the wings is orange-brown with black margins. The front wings have white spots on the outer third. The lower side of the front wings has a bright pink area. Part of the forewing margin is concave — one of the characteristics that distinguishes it from the similar and closely related painted lady, Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus). The lower side of the hind wing has a characteristic "cob-web" pattern and two large eye spots near the margin. By contrast, the painted lady has a row of four smaller eye spots. The American Pika is native to the mountains of the western United States and Canada, usually living in large boulder fields at or above the tree line. They are about 6-8 inches long (162 to 216 millimeters) and generally weigh about 6 ounces (170 grams.) Despite looking similar to a mouse, it is more closely related to hares and rabbits. They are herbivores, feeding on a variety of grasses, thistles and sedges. Pikas are active during the day, calling out from the tops of boulders or gathering food. They are the prey for a variety of different animals, so they are extremely cautious, turning tail into their burrows in the rock crevices at the first sign of danger. The Pine Marten is a smaller member of the family Mustelidae.
