Hawaiian Goose – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Hawaiian Goose:
The Hawaiian Goose or Nene is a species of bird native to the islands of Hawaii (found only on Maui, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi.) The name "Nene" comes from the the call of the bird, which is quite soft. It is believed the Nene evolved from the Canadian Goose, which likely came to the islands thousands of years before. While these birds spend most of their time on the ground, they are quite capable fliers. They are herbivores, feeding on leaves, grasses, shrubs, and even flowers. At one time these birds were very common in the Hawaiian Islands, but due to the introduction of non-native species, their numbers have drastically declined and they are now the rarest species of geese in the world. Conservation programs have brought the birds back from the edge of extinction however and there are about 800 in the wild. The Nene was designated the state bird of Hawaii in 1957. Hawaiian Monk Seal – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Hawaiian Monk Seal:
The Hawaiian Monk Seal is a critically endangered marine mammal native to the the Hawaiian Islands. It is a member of the Phocidae family, which are the earless and "true" seals. There is only one other species of Monk Seal - the Mediterranean Monk Seal. Adult males of the species grow to weigh about 300 to 400 pounds (140 to 180 kilograms) and have a length of roughly 7 feet (2.1 meters) Females are generally somewhat larger - 400 to 600 pounds (180 to 270 kilograms) and 8 feet (2.4 meters) long. There are only an estimated 1,100 individuals in the wild, and because of this number - along with the fact there are very low levels of genetic variations - there are very aggressive conservation efforts being made in order to save the species from extinction. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is the official state mammal of Hawaii. Hawaiian Tree Snail – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Hawaiian or Oahu Tree Snail:
This particular Hawaiian Tree Snail (Achatinella fulgens) is a critically endangered gastropod endemic to Hawaii. It is part of the family of Oahu tree snails which were devastated by the introduction of non-native snail and plant species to their fragile ecosystem. The snails are generally nocturnal, and can be found on native trees and large bushes, where they graze fungi from the surfaces of leaves and stems. Adults have both hermaphrodites male and female parts. When giving birth, the young are born live. Oahu tree snails are today restricted to mountainous forests above 1500 feet. Heermann’s Gull – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Heermann's Gull:
Heerman's Gull is native to North America, specifically in the US, Mexico and parts of British Columbia in Canada. There is thought to be about 150,000 mated pair in the world, and most of these nest on the island of Isla Rosa near Baja, California. Unlike other seagulls, these birds tend to stick close to the shoreline and venture inland very infrequently, and they are also mostly quiet and tend not to call out as other gulls do. They are extremely opportunistic feeders, and will eat small invertebrates, fish, reptiles, crustaceans, other birds and birds eggs and refuse cast off by humans. They are mostly found near rocky or sandy ocean shores, and in the pelagic or open ocean zones. The Heermann's Gull is named for Dr. Aldolphus Heermann, who was a surgeon and naturalist on a U.S. survey team in the West in the 1850's. Hereford Cow – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Hereford Cow:
Hereford Cows are a beef cattle breed, widely used both in intemperate areas and temperate areas, mainly for meat production. Originally from Herefordshire, England, United Kingdom, more than five million pedigree Hereford cattle now exist in over 50 countries. The Hereford cattle export trade began from United Kingdom in 1817, starting in Kentucky, United States, spreading across the United States and Canada through Mexico to the great beef-raising countries of South America. Today, Hereford cattle dominate the world scene from Australasia to the Russian steppes. They can be found in Israel, Japan and throughout continental Europe and Scandinavia. They are found in the temperate parts of Canada, the United States and Russia, as well as the temperate parts of Australia, the center and east of Argentina, in Uruguay, and New Zealand, where they make up the largest proportion of registered cattle. They originally found great popularity among ranchers of the American Southwest, testament to the hardiness of the breed; while originating in cool, moist Britain, they have proven to thrive in much harsher climates on nearly every continent.
