The Ferruginous Hawk (or "Ferry Hawk" for short) is the largest of the buteos with a broad and long wingspan of up to 60 inches. Because of it's large size is sometimes mistaken for an eagle. They are found in the arid and semi-arid grassland areas of central and western North America from northern Mexico to the plains of central Canada. Like other birds of prey these raptors feed on small mammals, reptiles, smaller birds and even insects. The Latin name means "royal" or "kingly" and their common name "ferruginous" means rusty color. The Burrowing Owl is a small predatory bird with long legs found in a variety of environments throughout much of North and South America. Adult owls measure 7.5–11 inches long (19–28 centimeters) with a wingspan of 20.0–24 in(50.8–61 centimeters) and weighing 4.9–8.5 ounces (140–240 grams.)These birds live in small groups, and can be found in grasslands, deserts and even in urban areas and cities, provided there is enough open area with low vegetation. Unlike most owls, Burrowing owls are active during the day, with hunting done primarily at dusk and dawn. The owls do not dig their own burrows, but rather take over ones already created by prairie dogs, badgers or ground squirrels, or ones that have been abandoned.
