The Violet-Backed Starling - also called the Plum-colored Starling or Amethyst Starling - is a smaller species of starling native to the woodlands and savannah forest edges of mainland sub-Saharan Africa. The males and females look very different (this is sexually dimorphic) with the males being a brilliant violet color on the head, wings and tail with white underparts whereas the females are a somewhat drab brown and white. The bird spend nearly its entire life in the trees, rarely coming down onto the forest floor. It feeds on insects and other invertebrates along with fruits and berries.
