The drawing of an Allen's Hummingbird was completed on 5.14.2011. This is the fifth illustration I've done of a hummingbird. Like the previous images, I chose to show the bird in flight, as I think this is the most attractive view of the animal. It has a very distinctive bill which is upturned. They are in the same birds family as stilts. The American Bald Eagle is large bird of prey native to much of the North American continent. The plumage of an adult bald eagle is brown with a white head and tail. Male bald eagles generally measure 3 feet from head to tail, weigh 7 to 10 pounds, and have a wingspan of about 6 1/2 feet. Bald eagles are believed to live 30 years or longer in the wild. They mate for life and build huge nests in the tops of large trees near rivers, lakes, marshes, or other wetland areas. In the US it is illegal to own the feather of these raptors. During the late 20th century the Bald Eagle was almost eliminated from the lower 48 states in the US, but thanks to conservation efforts the animal has now re-established itself and has been removed from the endangered species list. The American Bittern is a smaller, stocky brown bird and a member of the Ardeidae family. They inhabit soggy meadows, bogs and swamps where they stalk prey - usually small amphibians, fish and invertebrates - among the cattails and bullrushes. It's camouflage is superb, and if it believes it's been spotted, it becomes completely still and blend with it's surroundings, or it may choose to extend it's next upwards and sway with the breeze to hide itself. It can be found throughout much of North America, and is a rare visitor to Great Britain and continental Europe. It winters in the southern US, down into Central America. The American Coot is a member of the family Rallidae - which are small to medium sized birds, usually associated with lakes, marshes and other wetlands. This family includes the crakes, coots, and gallinules. They are a very widespread family of birds inhabiting nearly every climate on the earth. American Coots usually measure about 13–17 inches (34–43 cm)in length and have a wingspan of roughly 23-29 inches (58–71 cm) They are found throughout much of North America, down through Central and into South America. They are largely migratory, although that behavior has been in decline and more birds winter year round in some locations. While not the strongest fliers, they do have great endurance and are sometimes found thousands of miles from their native regions, sometimes reaching Europe and even Tasmania. They have large, comical looking feet like other species of their family which are highly adapted to their environments in the marshes, where they can use them to walk across vegetation on the surface. The American Crow is a member of the order of Passeriformes or perching birds. They are about 16–20 inches long (40–50 cm) with the tail making up about 40% their total length. Each wing is around 11–14 inches long (27–34 cm) Crows are highly intelligent birds that can be found in nearly every type of environment on the planet - natural or man-made. They've been witnessed using tools to obtain food or solve other types of problems. On a road where there is slow moving traffic, crows in Japan learned to drop tough-shelled nuts onto it, and waiting for the cars to run over and break open the nuts, returning then to eat them.
