The Mexican Free-Tailed Bat - also called the Brazilian Free-Tailed Bat - is a medium sized flying mammal native to North and South America. They are one of the most widespread mammals in in the Western Hemisphere, covering vast amount of land in the US, down south through Central America and South America. Their colonies can be massive, holding millions of bats. The largest know colony is in Bracken Cave near San Antonio, that is estimated to have some 20 million individuals. Tadarida brasiliensis is perhaps best know for their nightly departures from the Congress Street Bridge in Austin, Texas. This colony is believed to have 1.5 million bats, making it the largest urban bat colony in North America. Like other bats, the Mexican Free-Tailed Bat feeds on small insects they catch while in flight. The bat is the official flying mammal of both Texas and Oklahoma. The Mexican Wolf is a sub-species of the Gray or Timber Wolf . It was native to the regions of Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts from central Mexico to western Texas, southern New Mexico, and central Arizona. But due to a steep decline in the larger prey animals such as deer and elk, the wolf began to attack and kill domestic animals, which then led to the animal being hunted by government agencies and private citizens, until the population was eradicated in the wild. Today, there are only a few hundred alive on the planet, and these are either in zoos or preserves. There are efforts to save the species being made at various facilities in Mexico and The US. The Miniature Dachshund is a breed of dog that has been developed based on the larger standard Dachshund. Generally they weigh about 8-11 pounds with a height of 5-8 inches at the shoulder. They are also called "wiener dogs" for the obvious resemblance. The name "Dachshund" comes from the German word for "badger" (dachs) and "dog" (hund.) They are believed to have been developed in Germany in the 16th century, and their design and shape make it possible for them them descend into burrows and tunnels to kill badgers and other pests that dig holes. But they are also excellent hunting dogs for above ground prey too. They have an excellent sense of smell which gives them an advantage over some other types of dogs. The breed has three coats; smooth, long-haired and wire-haired. They are highly active and independent dogs, and their good nature makes them one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world. The Mongolian Wild Ass or Donkey, also called the Khulan or Kulan, is a member of the family Equidae. They are found in remote regions of Mongolia and Northern China. At one time it was also found in Kazakhstan, but the animal was extirpated due to hunting. Because of ongoing poaching, hunting and competition from domestic livestock for food the number of these wild equines has continued to decline to the point of where the entire species itself is in danger of extinction. Several conservation groups are working to preserve the species, although due to the remoteness of the Khulan's habitat this can be a very challenging undertaking. Mountain Gorilla – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Mountain Gorilla:
Mountain Gorillas are one of two subspecies of Eastern Gorilla. These large and powerful primates are only be found in four national parks of the Virunga Mountains in Central Africa. While these animals are very strong, they are also generally gentle and shy. They live in groups of 2-40 individuals, averaging about 11. Wild male gorillas can weigh up to 300 to 400 pounds (135 to 180 kg) while females are usually about half that size. Adult males are roughly 5.5 feet tall (1.68 meters) with an arm span or from 7.5 to 8.5 feet (2.3 to 2.6 meters). Female gorillas are somewhat shorter with smaller arm spans. Groups are led by a dominant male called a 'Silverback'. The Mountain Gorilla is a herbivore that eats over 100 different species of plants. They are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching and decades of civil war in the areas they live. As of Spring in 2010 their entire population in the wild was estimated to be less than 800 individuals. Gorillas can be identified by their nose prints, which are unique to each animal.
