The Hagerman Horse - sometimes called the American Zebra is an extinct species of horse that lived from the Pliocene period to Pleistocene period which ended about 11,000 years ago. The name comes from the town in Idaho it was discovered nearby in 1928. The horse was believed to have first appeared about 3.5 million years ago. It grew to about 43-57 inches at the shoulder (110-145 centimeters) and weighed roughly 385 to 847 pounds (110 and 385 kilograms.) The horse likely inhabited grasslands and floodplains where it probably lived in large herds, much in the same way present day zebras live in Africa. It is the state fossil of Idaho. The Japanese Serow is a goat antelope found in found in dense woodland in Japan, primarily in northern and central Honshu. Just a few decades ago, the serow had been hunted to near extinction. In 1955 the Japanese government declared the animal a "special national monument." Since it was protected, the species has rebounded to where the population is stable and it is not considered at risk. Adults grow to be about 28-33 inches tall at the shoulder (70-85 cm.) There is little difference in the appearance of males and females. These animals are mostly active during the day, feeding on coniferous leaves, plant shoots, and acorns. The Kiangis - also called the Tibetan wild ass, khyang, and gorkhar - is the largest of the wild asses. It is native to the Tibetan Plateau, where it inhabits montane and alpine grasslands. Its current range is restricted to Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, plains of the Tibetan plateau and northern Nepal along the Tibetan border. Kiangs are found on the Tibetan plateau, between the Himalayas in the south and the Kunlun Mountains in the north. This restricts them almost entirely to China, but small number are found across the borders in the Ladakh and Sikkim regions of India, and along the northern frontier of Nepal. Like all equids, kiangs are herbivores, feeding on grasses and sedges, especially Stipa, but also including other local plants such as bog sedges, Carex, and meadow grass. The Maned wolf is the largest member of the family Canidae found in South America. They are not closely related to any other living canid, and are not technically a wolf. Neither are they a fox, jackal, coyote or dog. Their habitat includes semi-open grassy areas with scattered trees and bushes. Unlike other wolves, Maned Wolfs do not form packs, and they generally hunt alone. They feed on small mammals, lizards, birds and fish.
