The Prairie Racerunner - a sub-species of the the six-lined racerunner lizard - is found in the short grassy habitats of the Midwestern part of the United States, from Colorado to Nebraska, south to northern Texas. The prairie racerunner is generally dark green or dark brown in color, with seven yellow stripes which run the length of the body from the head to the tail, and has a white underside. They are slender-bodied, and have a tail that is nearly twice the length of their body. Like most species of whiptail lizard, the prairie racerunner is diurnal and insectivorous. They usually grow to about 3.3 feet long (100 centimeters) although the largest one ever on record was nearly 5 five long. Because this species of snake occupies such a large range, it also can be found in various environments wherever prey is available. But generally as the name implies they are found on the prairies, usually in and around rocky outcroppings, hunting for small mammals such as mice, rats, squirrels and rabbits.
