The Short-Beaked Echidna is one of four extant species of echidna living in various environments in Australia - in fact it is the most widespread native animal on the continent. It is the only member of the genus Tachyglossus. It is remarkable for a few reasons. The most notable is the fact that as a monotremes, it has the unusual characteristic of being one of the few egg-laying mammals in the world. Short-beaked echidnas are usually about 12-18 inches long (30 to 45 cm) with a 3 inch snout (75 mm), and weighing between 4.4-11 pounds (2 and 5 kg.) It is sometimes called a "Spiny Anteater" although it is not closely related to other anteaters in the world. When the echnida feels threatened, it will roll itself into a ball, making use of the large spines for defense. It has a sticky tongue that it uses to catch ants and termites with, which makes up most of it's diet. The Short Billed Dowitcher is a medium-sized, stocky shorebird of the sandpiper family, which includes the snipes and the curlews. These birds are noted with the various sizes and shaped of the bill, which are sometimes curved, straight, long or short. The Short-Faced Bear is an extinct member of the family Ursidae or bears. It lived during the Pleistocene era, about 800,000 to 11,000 years ago.It is closely related to living bears like the Grizzly and Black Bear. It is generally believed to have grown to be much larger than any living species of bear today. It was one of the most common bears in North America, with many found in what is today California. The first documented fossil was discovered Potter Creek Cave, Shasta County, California in 1890 by American paleontologist Edward Cope. These were massive bears, with estimates that some individuals weighed 1600 to 1900 pounds, and with a stretched up nose could have reached nearly 15 feet into the air. It is not clear why these bears went extinct, and the smaller relatives the Grizzly and Black Bear survived. It could be the prey that they ate were killed off by humans, or they themselves became hunted by early humans, or that they were unable to adapt to a series of environmental changes in their range.
