Information about the American Alligator:
The American Alligator is one of only two species of alligator. The other being the Chinese Alligator. It is native to the Southeastern United States. This large reptile inhabits wetlands and swamps. The alligator is usually olive, brown, gray or nearly black colored with a lighter, white-ish underside. Adult males can reach up to 13 to 14.7 feet long with the females being slightly smaller and weighing less. The largest recorded American Alligator was nearly 19 feet long. Alligators area able and have killed human for prey, but in general they wary of them and will avoid contact slipping into the water as they are approached. The American Badger is found in the western and central parts of the US, central Canada and northern Mexico. They prefer a habitat of dry, open areas with deep soils that are easy to dig up, such as prairies. They are a member of the Mustelidae family, which includes the wolverine, ferret and weasel. They are low, stocky animals usually weighing about 15 pounds and a length of 30 inches, with large foreclaws. They are opportunistic omnivorous animals, feeding on plant matter and small animals such as gophers, ground squirrels, moles and other rodents. They will also attack ground nesting birds like swallows and burrowing owls, as well as lizards and insects. The American Bald Eagle is large bird of prey native to much of the North American continent. The plumage of an adult bald eagle is brown with a white head and tail. Male bald eagles generally measure 3 feet from head to tail, weigh 7 to 10 pounds, and have a wingspan of about 6 1/2 feet. Bald eagles are believed to live 30 years or longer in the wild. They mate for life and build huge nests in the tops of large trees near rivers, lakes, marshes, or other wetland areas. In the US it is illegal to own the feather of these raptors. During the late 20th century the Bald Eagle was almost eliminated from the lower 48 states in the US, but thanks to conservation efforts the animal has now re-established itself and has been removed from the endangered species list.
