The Australian Dingo is a free-roaming carnivore and member of the Canidae family, which are "wolf-like" or "dog-like" animals. It is believed that the dingo might have arrived with humans from Southeast Asia thousands of years ago. This would mean that the animals would have evolved to the conditions of Australia, and having been so separated and isolated they developed into their own unique species. Dingo live in a variety of habitats, including deserts, mountains, tropical forests as well as some urban areas where they occasionally can come into conflict with humans. They play an important role as one of Australia's apex predators. Over the last decades, the species has been interbreeding with the domestic dog, which they are close relatives to, and these dog-dingo hybrids now have caused their conservation status to be considered 'vulnerable.' The Dire Wolf is an extinct carnivore that roamed North and South America. At one point it was the most common predator in it's range. It went extinct about 10,000 years ago, having existed on the planet for some 1.7 million years. They were larger than today's Gray Wolf, having a length of roughly five feet (1.5 meters) weighing 110-175 pounds (50 -79 kg) which is roughly 25 percent larger than a Gray Wolf and the power of their jaws was thought to be about 130% stronger. The first specimen of a Dire Wolf was discovered in Evansville, Indiana in 1854. The Ohio river was low and a jawbone was found on the banks. There are many theories why the Dire Wolf went extinct while the Gray Wolf survived. Perhaps a series of environmental pressures such as a decline in prey, human predation and hunting and climate change forced the larger and less adaptable Dire Wolf into extinction. These rodents prefer old-growth forests or mature second-growth forests, and some authors regard them as dependent on its presence. The Platypus - or 'Duck-Billed' Platypus, is a small, semi-aquatic mammal native to the small streams and rivers of the eastern coasts of Australia. It can be found from the highlands of Tasmania and the Australian Alps, to the lush tropical rainforests of coastal Queensland, and north to the base of the Cape York Peninsula. It is a type of echinda, and one of only five living monotremes (which are mammals that lay eggs.) When the first specimen of this animal was brought to Europe from Australia, it was greeted with a mix of amazement and skepticism - with some observers going to far as to declare it a hoax. But of course eventually it was proved to be a real animal. On top of being one of the few mammals that lay eggs, it also has the distinction of also being venomous. The male of the species has a sharp spur on the hind foot that can deliver a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans, although it is generally not fatal. The Dugong is a large marine mammal native to the warm water oceans near the coastlines of the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. They are one of only four extant species of the order of Sirenia and the only living member of the genus Dugong. They are not closely related to other marine mammals, and are instead more closely related to elephants. They are herbivores, feeding on sea grasses and other plant matter in shallow waters. They closely resemble their relative the manatee, however the tail of the manatee is like a paddle, whereas the tail of the dugong is forked like that of a dolphin. These gentle mammals were hunted to near extinction for centuries, but all trade and hunt has been banned in nearly all parts of the world. They are very long lived animals, perhaps living some 70 years. The Eastern Bongo is a large herbivore native to the lush rainforests of north-eastern Central Africa. These mammals are the largest of the forest antelopes. An adult Bongo's height is roughly 3.6 to 4.3 feet (1.1 to 1.3 meters) at the shoulder and they are 7.1 to 10.3 feet long (2.15 to 3.15 meters) The females weigh approximately 330–520 pounds (150–235 kilograms), and males are approximately 490–890 pounds (220–405 kilograms) These shy animals are mostly nocturnal, feeding on plants, bark, vines, roots and fruits. Due to habitat loss and illegal poaching their numbers have declined rapidly and are considered extremely rare and are critically endangered. Intense conservations programs are being developed in their native range as well as zoos around the world, but especially in Europe. Years ago people believed that to touch a Bongo would result in spasms like those of an epileptic seizure. The Eastern Gray Squirrel (or simply Gray Squirrel depending on the region) is an arboreal mammal of the order of Rodentia (rodents) They are native to much of the eastern and mid-western areas of North America. They are highly adaptable animals, and because of this in areas they have been introduced (such as Britain and Ireland) they have largely displaced the native red squirrels. While it is called the Gray Squirrel, it also has some tan and brown in it's fur, and there are even pure white albino specimens of this species that are fairly common. These rodents can live in nearly any environment as long as it's not too hot and dry or too cold. They have readily adapted to life in urban areas and in some cases they can become so docile as to take food from the hands of humans.
