The Northern Cricket Frog is a small amphibian native to damp, moist areas of swamps and forests, usually not far from a body of water. This tiny amphibians ranges throughout most of the the central plains states, from western Texas, north to South Dakota and from the Florida panhandle north to southeastern New York. They are among the smallest of North America's vertebrates, usually only growing to a maximum length of 1.5 inches or 38 millimeters. Their coloration varies, but they are usually a mottled brown and gray, with a strip of bright green along the top from head to back legs. While they are members of the Hylidae (treefrogs) family, they are not arboreal. There are three recognized subspecies of this frog. The Northern Diamondback Terrapin is a sub-species of the genera of Malaclemys. Diamondback Terrapins are native to the brackish coastal swamps of the eastern and southern regions of North America, from as far north as Cape Cod in Massachusetts and down as far south as Florida and Texas. The name comes from the distinctive diamond shapes on the shell of the turtle. The coloration of oranges, reds, browns, grays, yellows and whites can vary from individual to individual, and species to species. Diamondback Terrapins have a very large variations of colorations, some of the most diverse in the order of Testudines. In most areas these turtles are considered vulnerable to near threatened. In 1994 the Diamondback Terrapin was made the State reptile and official mascot of the University of Maryland College Park. The Northern Elephant Seal is one of two species of elephant seal (the Southern Elephant seal being the other.) It is a member of the Phocidae family - which are "true seals." They are native to the beaches and sand dunes of the Pacific coast of North America. Elephant Seals are massive, and the males are much larger than the females. Large bull males can weigh in upwards of 5,000 pounds (2,3000 kg) and be 14 feet long (4 meters.) Male elephant seals are fiercely territorial and are famous for their brutal fights with one another during the mating season, when a dominate male is protecting his harem of females from a challenger. Although the battles are long and bloody, they are rarely fatal and generally the loser is allowed to slip away to a less desirable part of the beach.
