Archelon is a genus of extinct prehistoric sea turtle. These massive marine reptiles lived in the oceans of North America during the late Cretaceous (75-65 million years ago.) They grew to an amazing 12 feet long and weighed over 2 tons. The largest Archelon fossil, found in the Pierre Shale of South Dakota in the 1970s, measures more than 13 feet (5 meters) long, and about 4.9 meters (16 ft) wide from flipper to flipper. Unlike most modern turtles, Archelon did not have a solid shell, but instead had a skeletal framework supporting a leathery or bony carapace. Like other octopus, they are mostly solitary animals and only interact with others when mating. When threatened this cephalopod will sucks up water then expels it quickly in the form of a jet to propel itself away. To further deter predators, it can eject ink to mask its escape. This octopus does not live in its lair for its entire life; instead, it moves often except when caring for eggs or young. The Caribbean reef octopus feeds on crabs or shrimp, lobsters, and fish. It is a nocturnal species which only hunts at night. Harbor or Common Seals are found in both the northern hemisphere of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They are members of the family Phocidae. They are "true" seals commonly found in the coastal waters, growing to about 6 feet long (1.8 meters) and weighing roughly 300 pounds (130 kg.) It is estimated the entire worldwide population of these pinnipeds is between 5-6 million individuals. At one time these seals were hunted for their coasts, but bans on seal hunts have allowed the animals numbers to stabilize, although there are some subspecies that are considered threatened. The seals feed on a variety of ocean life, such as fish, crabs, shrimp, squid and even occasionally sea birds. They agile swimmers, but like other seals are sluggish on land. The Dusky Dolphin is a marine mammal found in coastal waters in the Southern Hemisphere. The dolphin's range is patchy, with major populations around South America, southwestern Africa, New Zealand, and various oceanic islands, with some sightings around southern Australia and Tasmania. Its range also includes the Falkland Islands. They are particularly common from Peninsula Valdes to Mar de Plata. It seems to prefer cooler currents and inshore waters, but can also be found offshore. It feeds on a variety of fish and squid species. The Dusky Dolphin is known for its remarkable acrobatics, having a number of aerial behaviors. Compared to other dolphin species, is small to medium in length. There is significant variation in size among the different population areas. There is some disagreement if this is indeed a separate species from the Minke Whale (it has not received an official scientific name at this time.) It is the second smallest of the baleen whales, growing to be about 23-35 feet long with the males a being little longer. Adults will generally weigh 3-5 tons. These cetaceans are widely distributed throughout the world's oceans, and can be found from the poles to the tropics. They occasionally will come near coastal areas, but it appears they tend to prefer the open oceans. Due to whaling these large ocean going mammals, were at one times considered endangered, but thanks to the ban on whaling - respected by most countries - their numbers have rebounded and their numbers are stable.
