Also called the Garibaldi Damselfish, this is a bright, orange colored fish native to the north eastern subtropical areas of the Pacific Ocean, from the Monterey bay down to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. These fish grow up to about 12 inches long, and prefer to live in fairly shallow water (about 100 feet deep) usually near kelp beds and rocky reefs. As sub-adults, the Garibaldi Fish are not as colorful as the adults and have small blue iridescent spots. It is the official marine fish of the state of California.
