The Miniature Dachshund is a breed of dog that has been developed based on the larger standard Dachshund. Generally they weigh about 8-11 pounds with a height of 5-8 inches at the shoulder. They are also called "wiener dogs" for the obvious resemblance. The name "Dachshund" comes from the German word for "badger" (dachs) and "dog" (hund.) They are believed to have been developed in Germany in the 16th century, and their design and shape make it possible for them them descend into burrows and tunnels to kill badgers and other pests that dig holes. But they are also excellent hunting dogs for above ground prey too. They have an excellent sense of smell which gives them an advantage over some other types of dogs. The breed has three coats; smooth, long-haired and wire-haired. They are highly active and independent dogs, and their good nature makes them one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world. They grow to about 2-3 inches long, and are generally olive green in color with brownish black splotches on the backs, legs and arms. The bellies are usually white or cream colored. These frogs are rarely found far from water. They prefer to live in and around lakeshores in close proximity to lily pads and other vegetation that can provide cover in case of danger. They feed mostly on snails, insects and other invertebrates. Adults will generally weigh 3-5 tons. These cetaceans are widely distributed throughout the world's oceans, and can be found from the poles to the tropics. They occasionally will come near coastal areas, but it appears they tend to prefer the open oceans. Due to whaling these large ocean going mammals, were at one times considered endangered, but thanks to the ban on whaling - respected by most countries - their numbers have rebounded and their numbers are stable. Because of ongoing poaching, hunting and competition from domestic livestock for food the number of these wild equines has continued to decline to the point of where the entire species itself is in danger of extinction.
