Information about the Aye-Aye:
The Aye-Aye is a strepsirrhine primate native to Madagascar. It's the world's largest nocturnal primate. It is the is the only extant member of the genus Daubentonia and family Daubentoniidae. This unusual looking animal combines rodent-like teeth and a specialy adapted thin middle finger. It fills a similar ecological niche as the woodpecker. The Aye-Aye is characterized by its unusual method of finding food; it taps on trees to find grubs, then gnaws holes in the wood using its forward slanting incisors to create a small hole in which it inserts its narrow middle finger to pull the grubs out. This foraging method is called percussive foraging. The only other animal species known to find food in this way is the striped possum. Due to habitat loss - as well as the native peoples seeing the animal as a bad omen and symbol for death causing them to kill them out of superstition - the Aye-Aye is classified as endangered. While the species has been widely domesticated and there are thought to be over 1,000,000 on the planet, there are only small, isolated populations in remote areas of the Gobi Desert that are wild. The IUCN has the Bactrian Camel on their Red List, and it is considered critically endangered. This camel is liklely the ancestor of all domestic two-humped camels. It is well adapted to the harsh conditions of the Gobi Desert, which is one of the driest, coldest places on earth. These camels can survive through droughts and when food is extremely scarce. Camels are the only land animals that can drink salt or brackish water with no ill effects. The Bald Uakari - also called the Bald-Headed Uakari - is monkey native to the seasonally flooded forests and other wooded habitats near water in the western Amazon of Brazil and Peru. The Bald Uakari weighs about 6.1-7.6 pounds (2.75-3.45 kg) with a body length of 18 inches long (45.6 cm.) Females are slightly smaller. It is rarely found outside of the forest canopy. It is omnivorous, feeding mostly on fruits found in the trees, but it will also eat flowers, buds and small animals. Because the monkey has such a small range, it is extremely susceptible to human activity such as habitat loss. Several conservative groups are working to help preserve enough natural habitat to save the Bald Uakari from extinction. Bat Rays feed on a variety of sea animals, such as crustaceans, mollusks and small fish. They beat their large pectoral fins (or "wings") along the sandy bottoms of the ocean to expose their prey. Like other rays, they have a sharp stinger in their tails, which can be used to defend itself against potential predators. The Bat star is a member of the family Asteroidea. They are also called the Sea bat, Webbed star, Bat Man and Broad-disk star. This ocean animal is an echinoderm (commonly known as sea stars). It usually has five arms, with the center disk of the animal being much wider than the stubby arms are in length. Bat stars come in many different colors, such as green, purple, red, orange, yellow and brown, either mottled or solid. The bat star gets its name from the webbing between its arms, which is said to resemble a bat's wings. The bat star is usually found in the intertidal zone at an average depth of 260 feet (79 meters). Its range extends from Sitka, Alaska to Baja California in the Pacific Ocean. It is most abundant along the coast of Central California and the Monterey Bay. Bat stars are important as scavengers, collecting algae and dead animals from the ocean floor and helping keep the ocean healthy.
