The Alaskan Malamute is a large breed of dog and member of the Spitz group - which are are a type of dog generally characterized by long, thick, and often white fur, and pointed ears and muzzles. The tails of these dogs are very distinctive as they are usually curled over the dog's back. Malamutes are commonly used to pull sleds and haul loads in the cold, snowy wastes of Alaska. While they do look similar to the Siberian Husky, they are very different dogs with distinctive personalities, anatomy and size. Their names come from a tribe of Inuit that lived in the upper western areas of Alaska. Their names were the Mahlemut. The dogs were used for a variety of purposes, such as hunting, pulling large loads, sledding and protection. It is the official state dog of Alaska. Allen’s Hummingbird – Signed Fine Art Print
Artist's notes:
The drawing of an Allen's Hummingbird was completed on 5.14.2011. This is the fifth illustration I've done of a hummingbird. Like the previous images, I chose to show the bird in flight, as I think this is the most attractive view of the animal. I had considered adding a flower to the drawing, but that would be somewhat incongruous with the other renderings. The drawing is based on a photo by David Marotta. Buy a Digital Download

Alligator Gar – Signed Fine Art Print
Fine illustration of an Alligator Gar (Atractosteus spatula).
Artist's notes:
The Alligator Gar was completed on 6.11.2011. I've seen these prehistoric looking fish in many aquariums, including the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. I wasn't sure they would make very good subjects to illustrate, as they tend to just hang around in a pretty horizontal position. But then I was going through some old photos I took when the aquarium was in it's temporary home on Howard Street, and I found this excellent image to work from Buy a Digital Download

Alligator Snapping Turtle – Signed Fine Art Print
Fine art illustration of an Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii.)
Information about the Alligator Snapping Turtle:
The Alligator Snapping Turtle is one of the largest freshwater turtles on earth and the largest in North America. It can be found in the Mississippi River and it's tributaries. They can be found in murky, backwater swamps and slow moving waters. Inside the turtle's mouth is has a built-in lure, which is a fleshy appendage it dangles while it sits motionless to attract fish. When a fish comes close enough it snaps its mouth shut with tremendous speed and force. Because of this formidable mouth which has been known to break fingers and cause other injuries they should be handled with extreme care or avoided all together if possible.
