The South American Bushmaster is a large venomous pitviper native to the tropical and subtropical rainforests of South America (including the island of Trinidad in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago). Adults grow to an average of 6.5-8 feet (2-2.5 meters), but they can reach lengths up to nearly 10 feet (3 meters) It is the largest of all vipers and the longest venomous snake in the western hemisphere, although it is not the heaviest - less than some boas and rattlesnakes. The toxin is one of the most deadly of all the New World snakes, and fatalities do occur if the victim does not receive medical attention soon after being bitten. Even though the tail and colors of the bushmaster resembles that of rattlesnakes, the sound emitted by the bushmaster is quite different. Acting like a rattlesnake, the bushmaster will shake its tail rapidly when alarmed by an intruder; however, no sound is produced from this shaking from which its species name muta is derived. Elgaria multicarinata, as their common name implies, are native to the grasslands, chaparral, and forests of Southern California. They're commonly found not too far from streams, ponds or other water sources. Alligator Lizards have prehensile tails, which can be dropped if attacked. It will grow back, but won't match the coloration of the body as well as the original tail. They do well in captivity and are often kept as pets. Their diet includes insects, small animals such as young mice and birds, tree frogs, and even other lizards. The Southern Brown Kiwi - also called the Tokoeka, or Common kiwi - is a species of kiwi from New Zealand's South Island. Until 2000 it was considered the same species as the North Island Brown Kiwi, and still is by some authorities The Binomial name is based on Greek and Latin. Apteryx means "A-" without "pterux" wings, and "australis" from "auster" the south wind, and "-alis" relating to. Hence Relating to the south wind is the meaning of Australis, not Australia. The Southern Brown Kiwi belongs to the Kiwi family and it is a ratite, and a member of the order Struthioniformes. Like all ratites it is flightless. Southern Brown Kiwis live in the South Island and Stewart Island. On the mainland (South Island) they live in Fiordland and Westland. Their range is temperate and sub-tropical forests, grassland, and shrubland, the denser the better. They are widespread throughout Stewart Island where they also live on the sand dunes. In 2000, after being recognized by IUCN, they were placed in the Vulnerable status group. They have an occurrence range of 9,800 km2 (3,800 sq mi) and population of 27,000, estimated in 1996.
