The Three-Toed Box Turtle is a subspecies of Terrapene carolina. This species is a group of hinge-shelled terrestrial turtles commonly known as box turtles. This box turtle gets its name from the number of toes on the hind feet. It is an average sized turtle, with a domed shell that typically grows to 4.5-5 inches. These reptiles can be found from eastern Texas to the northern edge of the Florida panhandle. They are very popular in the pet trade.
