The Chambered Nautilus is a mollusk, related to the octopus, squid, clam and snail. They are found in the Indo-Pacific area and live primarily near the bottom in waters up to 1500 feet deep. At night they rise closer to the surface. Nautilus pompilius can grow to a length of about 8 inches. The animal creates chambers that increase in size as it moves to occupy the outermost chamber of its shell. An adult may have about 30 of these chambers.
