Colorado Hairstreak Butterfly – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Colorado Hairstreak Butterfly:
The Colorado Hairstreak is a small flying insect native to the dry, scrubby regions - usually between altitudes of 6,500 to 7,500 feet - of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is often found in areas with Gambel Oak, on which the species is dependent on, because the caterpillars of the species feed on plant, and the adults lay their eggs on it. The adults feed on tree sap and aphid honeydew (which is a secretion that is produced by aphids.) Largely due to the heavy lobbying from 4th graders from Wheeling Elementary School in Aurora, Colorado this butterfly was designated the official state insect of Colorado in 1996. Colorado River Toad – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Colorado river toad:
The Colorado River Toad - also called the Sonoran Desert Toad - is a large amphibian native to the deserts the southwestern United States and northern parts of Mexico. They spend a large part of their lives in underground burrows, venturing out only to feed and mate and only when the conditions are right. As an amphibian, they absorb water through their skin, therefore the arid, dry air of the desert during daylight hours is an unsuitable environment for them. They are one of North America's largest amphibians, reaching lengths of up to 7 inches. They are noted for their skin and venom, which has 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenin in them, making them what's called a 'psychoactive toad' - in which the chemicals in the toad can be used to obtain an altered state of consciousness when ingested by humans. Columbia Mammoth – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Columbia Mammoth:
The Columbia Mammoth is an extinct mammal that was native to much of North America down into Central America. This large elephant was part of North America's "Megafauna" (which are very large land animals) much of which went extinct some 9,000 years ago. There is some discussion as to why these large land animals, along with others, went extinct, but it is believed a series of events such as climate change, the arrival of humans into their range along with perhaps a small meteor striking the earth might have been the cause of their demise. The Columbia Mammoth was the largest of the mammoths and the largest elephants ever to have lived, measuring 13 feet (4 meters) tall and weighing up to 11 short tons (10 metric tons.) It was 10.7 feet (3.3 meters) long at the shoulder, and had a giant head that accounted for 12 to 25 percent of its body weight. The tusks were impressive too, and could grow to be longer than 6 feet (two meters) It was a herbivore, and likely fed on a variety of different types of plants and perhaps even fruits. The Columbia Mammoth is the state fossil of both Washington and Nebraska state. Comet or Madagascar Moon Moth – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Comet Moth:
The Comet Moth is an African moth, native to the rain forests of Madagascar. The male has a wingspan of 7.75 inches (20 cm) and a tail span of 6 inches (15 cm) This makes it one of largest silk moths in the world. The female lays from 120-170 eggs, and after hatching the larvae feed on Eugenia and Weinmannia leaves for approximately two months before pupating. The cocoon has numerous holes to keep the pupa from drowning in the daily rains of its natural habitat. The adult moth cannot feed and only lives for 4 to 5 days. Although endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, the Comet moth is being successfully bred in captivity. The Commerson's Dolphin - also called the Skunk Dolphin, Piebald Dolphin and Panda Dolphin - is native to the cold waters off the coast of the southern tip of South America and also near the Kerguelen Islands (which are a group of islands in the southern Indian Ocean. This later population wasn't discovered until the 1950's. The dolphin is named for Philibert Commerson who first described them in 1767 when he saw them in the Straights of Magellan. It is one of the smaller cetaceans, growing only to about 5 feet long (1.5 meters) While it more closely resembles a porpoise, it's behavior is more typically dolphin, being very active, leaping and spinning from the water and riding in the fronts of boats.
