Archelon Giant Sea Turtle – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Archelon:
Archelon is a genus of extinct prehistoric sea turtle. These massive marine reptiles lived in the oceans of North America during the late Cretaceous (75-65 million years ago.) They grew to an amazing 12 feet long and weighed over 2 tons. The largest Archelon fossil, found in the Pierre Shale of South Dakota in the 1970s, measures more than 13 feet (5 meters) long, and about 4.9 meters (16 ft) wide from flipper to flipper. Unlike most modern turtles, Archelon did not have a solid shell, but instead had a skeletal framework supporting a leathery or bony carapace. Archelon’s closest living relative is the sea turtle known as the Leatherback.

Artist’s notes:
The Archelon (Giant Sea Tutle) was completed on 2.16.2013. Since becoming friends with the noted paleoartist Carl Buell I’ve been able to expand my animal image library to include several extinct animals (both reptiles and mammals) including some of the less typical species. Recently, I was in Houston, Texas and was able to visit the Natural History Museum there. It has an amazing collection of dinosaur skeletons, including one of an Archelon. Carl helped me out by providing a rough sketch of the Archelon, which I then fill in with ink and then digital tinting.
