Information about the Egyptian Tortoise:
The Egyptian Tortoise – also called Kleinmann’s Tortoise – is a critically endangered reptile native to the arid and semi-arid regions of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. They are the smallest tortoise in the Northern Hemisphere. These tortoises are prefer areas with compact sand and gravel plains, scattered rocks, shallow, sandy wadis, dry woodlands, shrubby areas, and coastal salt marsh habitats. They are least active when the weather is very cold or very hot. During the colder months, they are out most during midday. During the warm season, they are active in the mornings and evenings. The rest of the day is spent under bushes or in rodent burrows. They are popular as pets and often kept in captivity. Unfortunately, this results in illegal poaching. This, plus loss of habitat, has driven the species to the brink of extinction in the wild. They are already no longer found in Egypt. Several programs are seeking to have them reintroduced into areas where they’ve been extirpated.

Artist’s notes:
The Egyptian Tortoise drawing is was completed on 8.18.2014. I’m slowly making my way through all extant species of tortoise in the world. Today I finished the critically endangered Egyptian Tortoise. That leaves just a few native African tortoises left to do, and a few in Asia. I’ve already drawn all native species to South, Central America. The drawing is based on a photo by Bill Love and was used with permission.

The Olive Ridley Sea Turtle - also called the Pacific Ridley Sea Turtle - is considered the most abundant sea turtle on the planet. These reptiles get their name from the coloring of their heart-shaped shell, which starts out gray but becomes olive green later in life. There may be more than one million in the world's oceans today. Compared to other sea turtle species adults are relatively small, weighing on average around 100 pounds (45 kg). Olive Ridleys are mostly carnivorous, feeding on such creatures as jellyfish as well as small crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp.
