Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly:
The Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly is a smaller butterfly native to north central and north eastern regions of North America. It prefers areas that have abundant wet meadows that have the White Turtlehead (Chelone glabra) plant, which it is dependent on as a food source and place to reproduce. This striking butterfly gets it name not from the city in Maryland but that it has the same orange and black colors found on the crest for the American Colonist and the Maryland state flag. The butterfly has seen it’s number decrease over the years due to development of the land it depends on to reproduce, and an overpopulation of White-Tailed deer who feed on the White Turtlehead plant. In 1973 the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly was officially selected as the state Butterfly of Maryland in the US.
The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Artist’s notes:
The Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly was completed on 1.5.2013. This drawing represent the second to last official state butterfly I will need to draw for the 50 state project (drawing all animals officially designated at representations of their respective states.) This is one of those insect I really doubt I would have gotten around to draw were I not compelled to by the project. That said, It was a great subject and I’m happy with the results. The drawing is based on a photo by Frank Shufelt.
