Information about the Blue Crane:
The Blue Crane – also called the Stanley Crane or Paradise Crane – is a large ground-dwelling bird native to South Africa. It is about 3 feet 10 inches (100–120 cm) tall, with a wingspan of 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 7 inches (180–200 cm) and weighs 7.9–14 lb (3.6–6.2 kg) These birds are generally found in grassy uplands, open fields and plains. It has an extremely restricted distribution, the most of all of the 15 extant crane species. They feed on small crustaceans and other invertebrates such as crabs, grasshoppers as well as frogs, lizards and snakes. While the bird is still common in it’s range it has suffered a steep decline since 1980. mostly due to habitat loss due to human incursion. Conservation efforts have begun in South Africa, where is it honored as the national bird of that nation.

Artist’s notes:
The Blue Crane was completed on 11.30.2013. This drawing will be part of a collage of the world’s crane species. The more I learn about these amazing birds the more impressive they become to me. I saw a Sandhill Crane many years ago in northern Wisconsin. I was struck by how large it was, compared to most other bird I encountered. The drawing is based on a photo by Johann van Heerden and was used with his permission.
