Carpenter Ant – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Carpenter Ant:
Carpenter Ants are small invertebrates and members of the order Hymenoptera, which is one of the largest order of insects that includes wasps, bees and ants. There are about 130,000 indentified species in this order. They are indigenous to many different parts of the world, usually residing in dead and decaying wood to build their colonies and raise their offspring, carving out living areas in the wood, and that is where they get their common name from. However, they do not eat wood, and have little interest in healthy wood that is not in the process of rotting. They are extremely adaptable and will live in a variety of environments, often in manmade structures and are often viewed as destructive pests. Carpenter ants coloration can vary, even within the same species. But they are usually black, brown or a combination of the two.
The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:

Artist’s notes:
As I get deeper and deeper into the astounding variety of animal life there is to draw, I often return to less dramatic species that I may not have given a fair look at in the past, when tigers, elephants and other large animals are waiting to be drawn. Such is the case with the ant, which of course was one of the most familiar insects growing up, to the point where these invertebrates held little interest for me. Then a friend loaned a book to me by noted naturalist Edward O. Wilson which rekindled my interest in these humble insects. The drawing is based on a photo by Gerard Menut.
