The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, Paris, also known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica, is a Roman Catholic church, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is situated promenently on the hilltop of Montmartre, the highest point on Paris. After some legal maneuvering, the city seized the land and work began in 1875. The architect was Paul Abadie, who was a notable restorer of many famous religious buildings in France. Although he died shortly after the foundation was laid, and the work was continued by several other architects, who carried on the work until the building was completed in 1914. Official dedication was put off until the end of World War I in 1919. The building is remarkable because of it’s peculiar blending of architectural styles, such as Roman-Byzantine, along with many nationalistic themes, such as Joan of Arc and King Saint Louis IX who were both martyred. The church cost over 7 million francs, all of which were donated by private individuals and groups.

Artist’s notes:
This illustration of the Sacre Coeur was completed in the summer of 1996 when I was living in Paris. I spend several days outside of the church, among the tourists and the other artists, sketching this marvelous building with it’s impressive white towers and wedding cake like architecture. The sheer detail involved in drawing a structure like this can be a little intimidating, because of the style and the accuracy of the drawing there can be no shortcuts and every single inch of the illustration must be accurate and true to the building.

The Minneapolis City Hall - also called the Minneapolis Courthouse - was designed in 1888 by the architectural firm of Long & Keys. Construction on the building went on until 1909 and the final cost was in the area of $3.5 million dollars, considerably more expensive than the original $1.5 million that was budgeted for the project. It replaced an earlier building that served as the city hall, but that was too small to fit the ever expanding city's needs. The design is based on the Allegheny County Courthouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The building's style is known as "Richardsonian Romanesque" At the time, it was the tallest building in the city, and remained so until 1929 when the Foshay Tower was built. Information about the Saint Paul's Cathedral:
The Cathedral of Saint Paul, also called the National Shrine of the Apostle Paul, is a Classical Revival styled church in the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. It was built upon a large hill (called Cathedral Hill) looking over the downtown area of Saint Paul and across the 94 Interstate Highway towards the Saint Paul's Cathedral. It was designed by the prominent architects Emmanuel Louis Masqueray and Whitney Warren, after Archbishop John Ireland directed it's building on the site. Masqueray himself died in 1917, and only managed to complete a handful of designs of the interior. The design was inspired by French Renaissance architecture. The large dome reaches a height of 186 feet (57 meters) with a diameter of 76 feet (23 meters). Much of the materials for the cathedral came from nearby towns in Minnesota. The exterior walls are granite from Saint Cloud, and the interior walls are American Travertine, from Mankato.
