The Elk – also known as the Wapiti – are one of the largest species of deer in the world. is the largest of the four remaining North American elk subspecies. Males (bulls) average 875 pounds, but bulls weighing nearly 1300 pounds have been found in Alaska. Females (cows) average 700 pounds. These elk also have the largest antlers of all elk species, reaching lengths of up to four feet with a distinctive thee-point tip, or crown and the end. They are also among the largest mammals in North America. Elk live in forest and forest edge habitats where they feed on grasses, leaves, bark and plants. There are four living subspecies of elk in North America, with two now extinct. The species is named for American president Theodore Roosevelt.
