Subspecies of the North America Elk Poster Print

There are four subspecies of elk native to North America. At one time there were two more, but the Eastern Elk (Cervus canadensis canadensis) and Merriam Elk (Cervus canadensis merriami) are long extinct. Elk were completely extirpated from the areas east of the Mississippi in the 1870’s, but have been reintroduced using some of the existing subspecies from the western parts of North America.
