Mountain Apollo Butterfly – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Mountain Apollo Butterfly:
The Mountain Apollo Butterfly is a vulnerable insect native to the high alpine mountains of Europe, usually above 3,300 feet (1000 meters) There are several subspecies of this butterfly, sometime having small ranges in only one or a few mountain valleys. The species has endured many threats, such as over collecting by humans, although development of mountainous regions, disease and climate change are more likely the to have caused the drastic population drop of this butterfly. In order to help stabilize the population, many European governments have enacted laws to protect them, such as limits on collecting. Other conservation efforts include the protection of their environment, such as in Germany where conservationists have worked with sheep herders to help avoid the animals trampling the areas where the butterfly's larvae live. Comet or Madagascar Moon Moth – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Comet Moth:
The Comet Moth is an African moth, native to the rain forests of Madagascar. The male has a wingspan of 7.75 inches (20 cm) and a tail span of 6 inches (15 cm) This makes it one of largest silk moths in the world. The female lays from 120-170 eggs, and after hatching the larvae feed on Eugenia and Weinmannia leaves for approximately two months before pupating. The cocoon has numerous holes to keep the pupa from drowning in the daily rains of its natural habitat. The adult moth cannot feed and only lives for 4 to 5 days. Although endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, the Comet moth is being successfully bred in captivity.
