Information about the Humboldt Squid:
The Humboldt Squid - also called the Jumbo Squid, Pota or Diablo Rojo (Red Devil) is a large cephalopod native to the Eastern Pacific Ocean. It gets the name "Humboldt" from the current it lives in. The mantle alone of these large squids can reach nearly 5 feet long (1.5 m) They are one of the larger squids living today. Like other members of the family Ommastrephidae, they use bioluminescent photophores and are capable of quickly changing body coloration. They flash read and white - usually when hunting. While they are supposedly aggressive towards humans, this appears to only happen when they are feeding. They are not generally encountered by divers as they tend to stay at depths of 660 to 2,300 feet (200-700 m.)
