The Bolson Tortoise - also called a Mexican Giant Tortoise - is the largest of the four extant species of tortoise native to the North American continent. It lives in a remote region of the Chihuahuan Desert known as the Bolsón de MapimÃ, which is located in north-central Mexico. Because this remoteness, the tortoise was only discovered in 1959. It is estimated that there are only about 10,000 species living today, and their numbers have declined due to habitat loss, collection for the pet trade, despite the tortoise being a protected species. There are several programs working to protect this large reptile, including a program where several adults were brought to the Audubon Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch in order to captivity breed them for release into the wild.
