The Timber Rattlesnake - also called the Canebrake or Banded Rattlesnake - is a species of pitviper native to the deciduous forests of the eastern United States from southern Minnesota and southern New Hampshire, south to east Texas and north Florida. It is a larger snake, with the size being on average about 35.8-59.8 inches (91–152 centimeters) They are poisonous and bites can be fatal if not treated. The snake usually resides in rough terrain, boulder piles and other out of the way areas so encounters with humans are not common. The snake feeds on small mammals such as mice and rats, but will also eat reptiles, amphibians and other smaller snakes too. During the winter months it will hibernate in dens or rock crevices, sometimes with other snakes. The Timber Rattlesnake is the state reptile of West Virginia.
