The Minke Whale - as called the Lesser Rorqual - is a marine mammal of the order Cetacea. It is often classified as two species - the Common Minke Whale and the Antarctic Minke Whale. It is the second smallest of the baleen whales (only the aptly named Pygmy Whale is smaller) Minke Whales grow to be about 23-35 feet long with the males a being little longer. Adults will generally weigh 3-5 tons. These cetaceans are widely distributed throughout the world's oceans, and can be found from the poles to the tropics. They occasionally will come near coastal areas, but it appears they tend to prefer the open oceans. Due to whaling these large ocean going mammals, were at one times considered endangered, but thanks to the ban on whaling - respected by most countries - their numbers have rebounded and their numbers are stable. The Pacific White-Sided Dolphin is a medium sized cetacean (7-8 feet long, weighing 300 pounds) found in the cooler waters of the North Pacific Ocean. There is also an Atlantic White-Sided variety, which is somewhat larger. The beak of this dolphin is somewhat shorter and more rounded then other dolphins. It is a very strong swimmer and will swim alongside boats for extended periods of time. These dolphins feed on squid and small fish such as herring and sardines. It is believed that they feed mostly at night. The Scalloped Hammerhead Shark is a member of the family Sphyrnidae. This is a fairly large shark, though is smaller than both the Great and Smooth Hammerheads. This shark is also known as the bronze, kidney-headed or southern hammerhead. It primarily lives in warm temperate and tropical coastal waters all around the globe between latitudes 46° N and 36° S, down to a depth of 1,600 feet (500 meters). The Scalloped Hammerhead is a coastal pelagic species, it occurs over continental and insular shelves and in nearby deeper water. It is found in warm temperate and tropical waters, worldwide from 46° north to 36° south. It can be found down to depths of over 1,600 feet (500 meters ft) but is most often found above 82 feet (25 meters). During the day they are more often found close to shore and at night they hunt further offshore. Adults occur alone, in pairs or in small schools while young sharks occur in larger schools. On average, males measure 4.9 to 5.9 ft (1.5 to 1.8 m) and weigh approximately 64 lb (29 kg) when they attain sexual maturity, whereas the larger females measure 8.2 ft (2.5 m) and weigh 180 lb (80 kg) on average at sexual maturity. The maximum length of the scalloped hammerhead is 14 ft (4.3 m) and the maximum weight 336 lb (152.4 kg). Due to overfishing this species is considered endangered by several environmental groups.
