The Costa's Hummingbird is a small species of hummingbird - an adult grows only to about 3.5 inches (7.6–8.9 cm) long. The male Costa's Hummingbird's most distinguishing feature is its vibrant purple cap and throat. Females are much less colorful than the males. The Costa's Hummingbird is native to the arid, brushy deserts and any nearby gardens of the Southwestern United States and the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. Like other species of hummingbird the Costa's feeds on flower nectar and any tiny insects that it happens to find in the flower petals. The name is a tribute to the French nobleman Louis Marie Pantaleon Costa, Marquis de Beauregard (1806–1864). The Cotton-Top Tamarin is a very small monkey found only in a very small area of the tropical rainforests of northern Columbia. It is a member of the family Callitrichidae, which are marmosets and tamarins. They have a very distinctive white crest that extends from the forehead to the shoulders. They weigh only about one pound (.55 kilograms.) They are diurnal and arboreal, rarely coming down from the trees their entire lives. They are omnivorous, feeding on insects as well as vegetable matter, such as various fruits. They are important seed dispensers and many plants count on this to procreate in the rainforest. They are one of the more critically endangered primates in the world, with perhaps as few as only 6,000 animals in the wild. They are highly social animals, living in groups of about 6-13 individuals. Several conservation groups have aggressively attempted to stave off extinction for many years, but the tamarin's future remains uncertain. The Coyote (also occasionally called the Prairie Wolf) is a canine found throughout much of North and Central America. It is a cousin of the larger Gray or Timber Wolf, but unlike the wolf the coyote evolved in North America alongside the long extinct Dire Wolf. The scientific name Canis latrans means 'barking dog.' Coyotes are very adaptive and are often seen in urban environments, even ones with a dense human population. In cities they will scavenge garbage, but will also hunt and kill many small nuisance rodents such as rats or rabbits. While the coyote itself is sometimes seen as a pest, some populated areas welcome them to control the population of these animals.
