The Bat Ray is a is a stingray found in muddy estuaries and bays, kelp beds and rocky-bottomed shoreline in the eastern Pacific Ocean, usually along the coastline from the Gulf of California up to Oregon. They can live in waters with various levels of saline, so they are able to venture far into brackish waters searching for food. Bat Rays feed on a variety of sea animals, such as crustaceans, mollusks and small fish. They beat their large pectoral fins (or "wings") along the sandy bottoms of the ocean to expose their prey. Like other rays, they have a sharp stinger in their tails, which can be used to defend itself against potential predators. Bat Rays are fairly placid animals and are very popular in ocean themed parks (such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium) and will tolerate being touched by humans. The Bat star is a member of the family Asteroidea. They are also called the Sea bat, Webbed star, Bat Man and Broad-disk star. This ocean animal is an echinoderm (commonly known as sea stars). It usually has five arms, with the center disk of the animal being much wider than the stubby arms are in length. Bat stars come in many different colors, such as green, purple, red, orange, yellow and brown, either mottled or solid. The bat star gets its name from the webbing between its arms, which is said to resemble a bat's wings. The bat star is usually found in the intertidal zone at an average depth of 260 feet (79 meters). Its range extends from Sitka, Alaska to Baja California in the Pacific Ocean. It is most abundant along the coast of Central California and the Monterey Bay. Bat stars are important as scavengers, collecting algae and dead animals from the ocean floor and helping keep the ocean healthy. The Bay Area Blond Tarantula is of the genus Aphonopelma. They are large arachnids, with legspans up to 7-8 inches long. They're found in arid, dry areas generally burrowing down during the day and hunting at night. Although during mating season tarantula males can be found roaming around during the day in search of a female. While the Bay Area Blond Tarantula is venomous, the poison isn't extremely harmful to humans and generally the spider will rarely bite unless provoked. The Bearded Vulture - also called the Lammergeier or Lammergeyer - is a large bird of prey native to the rugged and mountainous regions from Europe through much of Asia and Africa. An adult bird is about 37–49 inches long (94–125 cm) with a wingspan of 7.6–9.3 ft (2.31–2.83 m). It weighs roughly 9.9–17.2 lb (4.5–7.8 kg.) Unlike many of the other vulture species, this bird does not have a bald head. But it does get most of it's food by scavenging. The Bearded Vulture is remarkable as it will take the bones of the dead animal far into the air and drop them on the rocks below to crack them open to expose the edible marrow. They will also feed on tortoises, and use the same technique to open the reptile's shell.
