Recently, photos of very rare 'ghost' cheetahs - lightly colored with no spots - have been captured by motion detecting cameras in remote locations of Africa. The Chestnut-Backed Chickadee is a small passerine bird native to the low elevation coniferous and mixed coniferous/deciduous forests. It is also commonly seen in backyards at birdfeeders. They can be found from Alaska in the north, all the way through much of the Pacific Coast to southwestern California. They are small - even for a chickadee - only 4.5–4.9 inches long (11.5–12.5 cm) weighing about 0.30–0.44 ounces (8.5–12.6 g.) They will eat insects and other small invertebrates found in the foliage, as well as seeds, fruits and will readily eat food offered at birdfeeders, and are especially drawn to suet. The scientific name changed from "Parus rufescens" to "Poecile rufescens" representing the belief that the bird is it's own specific genus. The Chilean Flamingo is a large species of shorebird closely related to Caribbean and Greater Flamingo. As the same suggests it occurs in temperate areas of Central Peru south through Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina to Tierra del Fuego, but it has also been introduced into areas of Germany and the Netherlands. The flamingo inhabits shallow saline and alkaline lakes and lagoons. Like all flamingos this bird is very gregarious as it generally flocks in groups of a few hundred to tens of thousands, where it displays ritualized movements of head and wings, accompanied by loud calls. The Chimney Swift is a member of the Icteridae family, which are the swifts. Their name comes from their preference to build their nests in the chimneys of the eastern US and Canada. While they spend their summers in North America, they will migrate thousands of miles to spend the winters in the northwestern parts of South America. They are smaller birds, being about 4.7-5.9 inches long (12-15 cm) with a wingspan of about 11-12 inches. They weigh roughly .6-1.1 ounces (17-30 grams.) These birds are highly gregarious and are often observed in massive flocks, usually in and around the chimney in where they build their nests. While the species is thought to number around 15 million, they are considered threatened because their population has dropped precipitously over the last few decades.
