The Caribou or Reindeer is a deer species native to the arctic and sub-arctic regions. They can be found in the tundra and taiga environments. While their population are steady, there are a few sub-species that have gone extinct. Originally, the reindeer was found in Scandinavia, eastern Europe, Russia, Mongolia, and northern China north of the 50th latitude. In North America, it was found in Canada and Alaska, and the lower northern United States from Washington to Maine. Up until the 19th century, this deer was found in North America as far south as Idaho. Unlike some deer species, both sexes grow antlers. Reindeer are ruminants, having a four-chambered stomach. They mainly eat lichens in winter, especially reindeer moss. However, they also eat the leaves of willows and birches, as well as sedges and grasses. The Blacktailed Prairie dog is a member of the family Sciuridae. These small mammals are native to the Great Plains of North America stretching from southern Canada down into northern Mexico. An adult usually weighs about 1.5 to 3 pounds (0.68 to 1.4 kg) with a body length of roughly 14 to 17 inches (36 to 43 centimeters), with a 3 to 4 inch tail (7.6 to 10 centimeters.) Males tend to be larger and heavier than the females. They are very social animals, living in multi-family burrows with a hierarchy and relatively complex social order. Some of these colonies are massive, with one as large as 4,000,000 individuals covering 25,000 square miles described in Texas. At one time, the species was considered endangered due to environmental pressures and disease, but thanks to conservation effort these rodents have rebounded and are no longer considered at risk. The IUCN has the Bactrian Camel on their Red List, and it is considered critically endangered. This camel is liklely the ancestor of all domestic two-humped camels. The Arabian Oryx - also called the White Oryx - is a medium-sized antelope native to the gravel and hard sand deserts of the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula. It is the smallest of the Oryx genus. It has been, however, extirpated from most of it's historical range and now lives only in small pockets, usually in protected areas. The Arabian Oryx is a social animal, usually living in small groups. They tend to graze on a variety of grasses, but will also eat the buds on trees, fruits, tubers, roots and herbs. While the animal is considered endangered by some conservation groups, aggressive programs have been instituted to preserve the species and save it from extinction. The American Bison once roamed the grasslands of central North America in massive herds, numbering in the tens of thousands. Towards the end of the 1800s there was a push for their preservation and aggressive breeding and reintroduction projects were started. Even after over a century there are thought to only be roughly 20,000 bison in the wild today. They are a protected species on federal lands, but in some areas they are raised for their meat.
