Information about the American Alligator:
The American Alligator is one of only two species of alligator. The other being the Chinese Alligator. It is native to the Southeastern United States. This large reptile inhabits wetlands and swamps. The alligator is usually olive, brown, gray or nearly black colored with a lighter, white-ish underside. Adult males can reach up to 13 to 14.7 feet long with the females being slightly smaller and weighing less. The largest recorded American Alligator was nearly 19 feet long. Alligators area able and have killed human for prey, but in general they wary of them and will avoid contact slipping into the water as they are approached. The American Alligator is the official reptile for the state of Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Artist’s notes:
The American Alligator illustration is an older drawing, dating from early 2004 with the digital tinting added in 2007. It is based on a photo by the talented animal photographer John White. In May of 2009 I redid the coloration on the American Alligator to make it more accurate and realistic.
