The American Toad is a common amphibian found throughout the eastern US and Canada. They are rarely found far from water and rely upon semi-permanent freshwater ponds or slow moving streams for their early development. American Toads are able to live in a variety of environments, from forests to fields and can be found living in urban areas near gardens, where they surface at night to hunt insects near artificial light sources such as porch lights. They have poisonous glands on their ‘warts’ but the toxin is only dangerous to humans if ingested or if it comes in contact with eyes.
