Information about the Black-Tailed Jackrabbit:
The Blacktailed Jackrabbit, also called the Desert Hare, is a comment rodent member of the Lepus genus. It’s native to the southwestern scrubby deserts of North America. It is the third largest rabbit found in North America, behind the Antelope Jackrabbit and Whitetailed Jackrabbit. It is also the most widely distributed. The rabbit feeds mostly on shrubs, small trees, grasses, and flowering plants.

Artist’s notes:
The Black-Tailed Jackrabbit was completed on 11.6.2010. As always, fur rendering fur on a mammal can prove challenging. I find if I use a smaller sized pen so the stipple is smaller, the overall effect is a softening of the texture of the animal’s coat. I spent extra time on the eye here, because I knew it was going to be where the eye was naturally drawn in to that part of the rabbit. The drawing is based on a photo by Gene Thompson.
