California Dog-Face Butterfly – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the California Dog-Face Butterfly:
The California Dog-Face or Dog-Faced Butterfly is a flying insect native to only certain areas of woodlands, and only in California. The males and females are sexually dimorphic, which means they have different physical appearances. Only the male has the distinctive dog-head looking markings on the upper wings, whereas the female are mostly just a pale yellow with a single black spot on the upper wings. Adults of the species feed on flower nectar, and it it believed the insect tends to favor purple flowers. The California Dog-Face Butterfly is notoriously hard to photograph, as they are difficult to get close to and fly very fast. It was made the official state insect of California in 1972.
The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Artist’s notes:
The California Dog-Face Butterfly was completed on 5.30.2012. This butterfly came to my attention only because of the fact that it is the state butterfly of my adopted home of California. I have to admit, it took me a moment or two to figure out how the insect got it’s name! Of course, it’s obvious to me now. The drawing was created by reviewing a series of different images of the butterfly, and I noted the coloration did vary from a pale yellow/white to a darker, more striking orange/yellow combination, which is what I went with for the drawing.
